Located at one side of the main square of Cusco, it was build over one of the most important temple in the Inca period dedicated to the God Wiracocha. The platform of the construction has the shape of a Latin cross, and it’s composed by five naves in roman style.
It was built in 1560. It was finish in 1668. The difference in the majority of the temples in Cusco, they didn’t suffer any damages in the earthquake of 1650. Like the one in Lima, the Cathedral of Cusco has gothic characteristic, Manieriste Renaissance and Baroque. It has two towers that are very solid, its lateral façades are maneriste and the central one is baroque.
It has amazing altars with a very renaissance style such as baroque and neoclassic. They are beautiful works of cusquenian art, its pulpit made out of wood and all carved by hand. It also has many paintings from the school of art of Cusco, paintings from the artist Diego Quispe Tito, Basilio Santa Cruz Pumacallo, Basilio Pacheco y Marco Zapata, artist that made a very peculiar painting of the last supper in with the main dish is the roasted Guinea Pig.

Located in the small square of San Blas and was one of the first churches to be built in Cusco by the order of the king Francisco Toledo which its original construction was destroyed by the earthquake of 1650. The actual church has a platform of the construction in the shape of a Latin cross and the outside has simple characteristic of Spanish art.
The most important things of value in this church are the paintings collection, its wonderful altar that was made all from one piece made out of cedar and to be considered the finest piece of work ever made in the Americas. This work of art goes back to the XVII and it was made in memory of Juan Tomas Tuyru Tupac.
- Santa Catalina Convent

It was founded in 1605; the church and the monastery should have been built after the earthquake of 1650. The church has beautiful baroque altars and a superb pulpit. The altars were a piece of work of Pedro de Oquendo and Diego Martinez de Oviedo (both of c.XVII). Its oils are signed by Juan Espinoza de los Monteros y Lorenzo Sanchez de Medina in the second third of c. XVII.
It has an awesome museum and also the nuns are well-know because of their masapan and almond jelly.

This church is located in the square of Santo Domingo. Called in the times of the Inkas “Intikancha”, it was the main temple of the Quechua in the valley of Cusco, this temple at the beginning was dedicated to everything that had to due with agriculture.
The actual church has three naves and a platform that was built in the shape of a Greek cross, the outside of the church has characteristics of the Spanish art and the tower of the church has characteristics of baroque.
Church and convent that was built in top of a structure of the Qorikancha (gold precincts), the main temple Inca (dedicated to the sun cult); the walls inside this temple are covered with a sheet of gold.

Located in the square of San Francisco, founded by the Franciscans fathers, in the year 1645, it has two facades and a tower that is made all in the Spanish style. The construction was finish in 1650.
In the inside of the convent there is an awesome painting that measures 12x9 meters, and the painting tell about the Franciscans life, it was made by Juan Espinoza of Monteros. Besides you can also find art works by the artist Diego Quispe Ttito, Basilio Santa Cruz, Antonio Sinchi Roca, Marcos Zapata and many others.
It was built by the order of the king Francisco de Toledo in 1572; it should have been restored after the earthquake of 1650. Its base has the shape of a Latin cross, and it has a high tower that it has a square shape.
- La Merced Church

Located at the “Espinar Square” (Small square Espinar) the church of convent of La Merced, suffered really bad damages during the earthquake of 1650, but it was rebuilt in a period of 15-20 years and nowadays is conformed by the following:
Manieristic facades which contrast with the exuberant baroque of the bell tower. It has an important plateresque choir set of chairs and very important oil paintings such as San Laureano de Basilio Santa Cruz Pumacallo (c.XVII). In it, the mortal remains of both Diegos de Almagro are located, el Viejo (1538) and el Mozo (1542).
The convent had four monasteries, know days there are only two of them and only one of them is known actually La Merced School.The church is dress up with three naves, one that is eleveated and the other one is lower and it also has a platform made in the shape of a Greek cross.
Inside the four monasteries we find a great variety of paintings of the ancient church La Merced, which they represent the live of Don Pedro de Nolasco founder of the Mercedaria order that, were painted by the artist Ignacio Chacon.
In this church we find the famous jewel “Custodia de la Merced”, made in 24K of gold and 1518 diamonds, 615 ruby, topaz, emerald and a big stone in the shape of a mermaid, consider the second one biggest in the world.
Church of La Compañia de Jesus
The first construction was made by the general of the Church of Francisco de Borja in the year of 1566, but the earthquake of 1650 brought it down, the second construction was finished in the year 1671 made by the architect Juan Bautista Gilles. All of the church was build entirely in rock it has a very rich artistic talent as well as pictorial. And also some carves.
Is one of the monuments that have the most vivid appearance in the baroque style, made in to of the Amarukancha, the temple of the Panaca of the Inca Huayna Capac. Its location and its opulence that hid the supremacy of the cathedral, in consequence there was a dispute between Jesuits and the Cusquenian clergy.
La Compañia de Jesus Church
Belen Church
Located in one of the inka neighbourhoods called Ch'akillchaKa, to the west of the city of Cusco, this church just like many other ones suffer a lot of damage with the earthquake of 1650.
The patron saint of this church is La Virgen de Belen, it was donated by Spain along with the Señor de los Temblores, both are in the Cathedral, is one of the most riches ones being that its made with a lot of silver, its portable platforms are one of the most artistic in colonial art.
San Sebastián Church and Parish
In the beginning it was called the church of San Lorenzo but this one suffered damages with the same earthquake of 1650. it is now located in what we called main square of the district of San Sebastian, that is about 5km from Cusco city, this church was built with many different archaeological groups.
The temple of the three naves, the platform is in the shape of a Latin cross, the mayor altar is in art with the baroque style.
Santa Teresa Monastery
Built next to what we call now days the Parque de la Madre, and at one block from the main square of cusco. This church belongs to the congregation of the Carmelitas Descalzas. The church was built in the year 1676 and the paintings that one can find there represent the life of Santa Teresa.
Santa Clara Church and Convent
Located now days in the Santa Clara ST just five blocks west of the main square, its first foundation was in 1551 The mayor altar was build by Pedro de Oquendo and it characteristics is of the mirrors that surround the altar, the church it has a rectangular shape and just one nave.
La Recoleta Convent
Built in the inka neighborhood of munaysenca( beautiful nose) to the west of Cusco city, sector that is now call Socorro. It was founded in the year 1599 by the father Francisco de Velasco. The church has only one nave and one of the most beautiful sculptures of the “Cristo Pobre” that was created by the artist Natalicio Delgado.
San Cristóbal Church
Location: In Qolqanpata Inca quarter, near of Saqsayhuaman.

Located in the Qolqanpata neighbourhood, built in what it was the palace of Manco Capac. Its construction started in the year 1673 and it was a monastery to attend the needs of the Indians or locals. The tower of the church is made out of stone but the church it self out of adobe.
It was built in the first years of the conquest of the Indian Cristobal Paulla, lord of Kolkampata, how his devotion is shown for the Christian religion. The statue of the lord is gigantic and is shown in the Corpus (Cusquenian festivity).
Near to that place, the famous house belonging to Lope de Aguirre and then it was the residence of Simón Bolivar in its accommodation in Cusco.
Santa Ana Parish
Located in the Carmenqa neighbourhood, to the north west of the main square of Cusco. This church conserves the singular characteristic that had back then and it was built in the year 1559 that was created by the natives. Here exists one important collection of paintings that refer to the Corpus Christi and now days you can find them in the Religious Art museum.
San Pedro Church
Location: In front of San Pedro Market.

At its beginnings was a hospital to attend the Indians and the locals. It was built in the year 1556 and is located about 6 blocks from the main square of Cusco. This church like all the other ones, has very important art and paintings, the pulpit was created by Juan Tomas Tuyru Tupac. |
